Hatching season is here! On Sunday, June 5, Christophe Harbour guests spotted 24 Leatherback turtle tracks heading towards the water on Sandy Bank Bay. The turtle’s nests were discovered, along with a baby turtle struggling to dig itself out of the sand. With a little assistance, the turtle was able to make its way to the water and take its first swim. As of now, 11 turtle nests have been marked and within the month many of the eggs should hatch.

Sadly, construction on the Beach Club has already damaged 2 of the leatherback turtle nests on Sandy Bank Bay.  They were due to hatch in mid July; however while digging a drainage pipe for the pool through the dune, the nests were likely crushed.  This is clearly something that needs to be taken a bit more seriously by the CH team.

Special thanks to the St. Kitts Sea Turtle Monitoring Network and Dr. Kimberly Stewart for their quick assessment and observation of the Sandy Bank Bay nests. They find it highly unlikely that any were disturbed. However, SKTMN volunteers will continue to watch the nests. We also greatly appreciate their assistance in helping to educate our staff, provide guidelines, and implement a new and improved marking system to identify and protect all the nests in Sandy Bank Bay.
